SUSTAINABILITY
ORGANIC COTTON
Cotton is one of the oldest known fibers. In fact, it’s been made into fabric since 3 000 BC. But the story behind conventional cotton is not very fluffy... The use of pesticides and unfair working conditions are reasons why we should all think twice before buying conventionally produced cotton.
Organic cotton is grown and farmed without the use of pesticides, eliminating highly toxic substances from the environment. This has long-term benefits for both humanity and the planet, which is why it is often seen as more environmentally friendly compared to conventional cotton.
FAIR TRADE
By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.
GLOBAL ORGANIC TEXTILE STANDARD (GOTS)
The aim of Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is to define worldwide recognised requirements that ensure the organic status of textiles – from the harvesting of raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing, to labelling – to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer.
the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the strictest certification for organic materials on the market today. It involves rigid controls of chemical use and fair working conditions, to name a few, throughout the entire manufacturing process. That includes the processing, manufacturing, packaging, trading, and distribution of all textiles. So if you’re looking for garments made in organic cotton - look for this certification.
Don’t forget that when you buy garments made in GOTS-certified organic cotton you’re investing in water conservation, better soil, cleaner air, and farmers living standards. Therefore the price is sometimes, but not always, higher. However, with demand on the rise, more choices will become available.
OEKO-TEXT
Oeko-Tex is a registered trade mark, representing the product labels and company certifications issued and other services provided by the International Association for Research and Testing in the Field of Textile and Leather Ecology. Most notably known for STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®, one of the world's best-known labels for textiles tested for harmful substances. It stands for customer confidence and high product safety.
PETA-Approved Vegan
Vegan fashion – clothes, shoes and accessories that contain no leather, fur, wool, skin, exotic skins or any other animal-derived fabric – is revolutionising the way that we shop and dress. As more and more people vow never to clothe themselves in cruelty, retailers and designers are meeting the demand for animal-friendly clothes in style.
Although you can easily find fashionable animal-free products in many high-street stores, some companies go further, either by ensuring that everything they sell is 100 per cent vegan or by clearly sign-posting their vegan products. Our “PETA-Approved Vegan” logo is a way of recognising these progressive compassionate businesses – and helping ethical consumers identify where to shop with confidence, safe in the knowledge that they’re not supporting the exploitation of animals.
